Cleared by the Nephrologist
SO today we went to the nephrologist for the second time in Piper's short life span. LONG day for all of us, but good news in the end.
After Piper had her UTI in the hospital, Dr. Gyano consulted with Dr. Auron (pediatric nephrologist who saw her last year). He said he wanted to see her to make sure there were no problems. He also wanted a catheter urine specimen to make sure it was a "true" sample with no chance of contamination, from skin or otherwise.
So shortly after our stay in the hospital, we had an appt to have that done at Loring Hospital in Sac outpatient department. Unfortunately for Piper (and me), they were unable to obtain the specimen via cath after 2 tries, so we called it quits. None of our nerves could handle any more. So at that point, Dr. Gyano checked with Dr. Auron and he said they would just do it then when we came down for our appt in April.
So here we are. We had another ultrasound done first. Then we went and saw Dr. Auron. Initially we just discussed if whether her "uti's" were TRUE UTI's or just contaminated specimens due to the method of collection. We both kind of felt like we were "stuck" because we didn't want to assume they were false positives and have there be something wrong, but we didn't want to cath Piper needlessly. After much discussion, we decided to attempt as sterile of a sample of urine at possible through a pedi bag. If that came back negative then we would know that she doesn't have a UTI. If it came back positive, then we would consider catheter at that point. So the nurse sterilized the area and via adhesive on the bag, attached it to Piper. At this point she was given Oreos, soda, juice, and water to encourage her to drink. She was more than happy to oblige. :)
Then we had to have labwork done which lead to a lot of tears by Piper, but more so by Drew. Then back up to collect urine sample for the nurse.
Long story (somewhat) short, the UA was clear, the bloodwork was all normal, and so was the ultrasound..YAY!
So, Dr. Auron said that we don't need to follow up with him anymore, unless she ever has protein in her urine or elevated blood pressure (which he recommends she have checked every year as a screening). If in the future she does have recurrent UTI's he also recommends that she follows up with a pediatric urologist as we now know that there is nothing wrong with her kidneys and we would have to consider something being wrong with the functionality of the bladder.
BUT at this point everything is fine and we're good to go!

Not a bad way to spend a visit to the Doctor.. |
